ACTIVITIES

WHEYPACK project is organised around the following workpackages:


A. Preparatory Action (Finished)
Assessment of the technical information about PHB bioproduction process using whey as raw material, which is needed for the next implementation actions. Identification and characterization of whey will be performed and PHB production at lab scale will be studied.

B. Implementation (Finished)
Demonstration of the fermentation and recovery process of PHB from whey at pilot plant scale. Detailed assessment of the compounding formulation of PHB packaging material and preliminary design of PHB-based packaging prototypes at pilot plant scale. Design and production of PHB-based packages at industrial scale by standard injection moulding.

C. Monitoring of the impact of the project actions (Finished)
Validation of the PHB-based packaging solution to dairy products (cheese). Validation of the environmental and economic impact of the project results versus the starting point (the use of other plastic materials from fossil sources such as polypropylene, PP). Specific indicators will monitor the improvement of environmental targeted issues throughout the project and progress monitoring will be continuously evaluated and quantified at the end.
